Do you ever tire from looking at the hardware on your doors? Well, when we purchased our home, the builder put brass hardware and fixtures all throughout the house. I'm not a fan of brass with my decor. Let's just say...the brass had to go!
I looked into the cost of replacing the Brass with Bronze hardware and it was going to cost about $3,000 + to replace everything. I just couldn't fathom spending that much money on hardware, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. lol! ;)
This is what the door knobs looked like before.
This is what the hinges looked like before.
For the hinges:
I started out using a Flat Black, but it showed finger prints, so I changed that thought and decided to go with a Gloss Black by RUST-OLEUM.
This is what it looked like after I sanded and painted them. I was too lazy to remove all the hinges off the doors, so I gave them a quick sanding with sand paper, wiped them down with a damp cloth, and began to paint with a small paint brush. It was so simple and easy. I even painted the screws while still on the hinges. Once I got the hang of it, I literally had ALL the "hinges" done throughout the house in 2 1/2 hours. I have a gazillion doors in my house, too!
See the new look....so much better now!
Below is what bronze looks like, but they are so pricey.
This is the gloss black.
And Black hinges.

For the Doorknobs:
I did remove all the doorknobs from the doors, which took some time. I laid them out, sanded them, wiped them down, and then I spray painted them with Gloss Black Hammered Spray Paint. The spray paint is AWESOME, because it dries super fast. The doorknobs took the better part of an afternoon to complete, but by 5pm I had all the doorknobs dry and back on the doors. Below is what I used.
And whala....done!! Bye, bye brass....hello gloss black!
Much better! An appearance of new hardware for under 5 dollars (for the hinges) and about $40.00 for the spray paint, can't beat that, right?
On another note, (not decorating related at all) BUT, would you like to see what I was doing yesterday? I was off-roading with my Jeep club at a place called Crozet. I had fun and the next 2 pictures are me about to go down and over some rocks. Weeeee!!

Carrie, the author of Dittle Dattle
introduced Jessica
who has a Design Dilemma with a nook in her bedroom. Carrie then asked 3 designers...
and me to come up with a design for Jessica's nook area. We all created a Design Board to showcase our ideas for her nook.
It will be a fun week over at Dittle Dattle, so please stay tuned!
Have a great day, ladies!

such a great idea!!! our builder also went crazy with brass. I am in the process of changing out all the light fixtures and the door knobs and hinges were next on my list. I do believe you just saved me a TON of money!!! Thank you so much for sharing.

Liz, this looks great!! Made such a dramatic difference and I am all about spray paint!
Love it! On my way over to Dittle Dattle to check out the dilemma!
Lou Cinda :)
Brilliant!! You have inspired me!!! Happy Monday!
LOVE the new oil rubbed bronze look! It goes good in your home with your decor style.
We replaced all of our builder brass knobs a few months ago to the ORB finish. I like having the ORB finish, it goes better with the other things in our house. You are so smart to try the spray paint on them. Looks Fab!
We are slowly replacing the faucets now. I wonder how the spray would hold up to the water?
Love the jeep shots. You rock, girl! Fun times for your family. It must be even more fun to have other Jeepers to go out with. My hubby would like to have one.
I can't wait to see what you pretty ladies have come up with for Jessica's nook.
have a happy day~ L
The hinges look so much better. Love it. Hugs, Marty
I love that!! I would do the same thing no point in replacing them all so much cheaper to just use paint!! I cant wait to see what your design skills have in store Im excited to read it!!
That is a fantastic look, fantastic price and the best idea I have seen all day!!~ XO I am so excited about this decorating dilemma idea for you gals!
Love your *new* hinges! Fabulous idea ... and, just think of all the money you saved with your creativity! Your morning room looks beautiful, as always! Your off road adventure looks like a blast ... and how neat that you guys are in a Jeep club, too! FUN! I'm so glad (and flattered) to be part of Carrie's design team ... such great company hanging with you, Kara and Carrie! Hugs, Becca
Wow, great transformaion, Liz! I'm sure many people will be happy to know they can do this. There are many homes with brass hinges and knobs! The price of new is really high, so this is a nice alternative.
What a great new look! You are my hero! You must have super-powers to get things done as quickly as you do. I love visiting your blog.

Well I never would have thought to notice that aspect. It looks good Liz! Ours are all a brushed silver and are going to have to stay that color. LOL! I can't paint a thing.
Liz what a great idea. I have the same problem in my house, the builder use all brass hardware and I hate it. I was thinking of painting them too but hated the thought of having to take all the doors off their hinges. But what you did is so much easier and they turned out great! One quick question did you use a foam brush or a regular paint brush? I can't wait to get started, Martina
Liz, A lot of hard and tedious work you did, Bravo! All the little touches make a big difference and complete your rooms. I love your glass double French doors with the pretty green wreath, and other wreaths. You are very brave to drive on that terrain and full of courage! Best wishes for the group project design dilemma.I know you will all have great ideas. Emelia.
Oh I love to go off roading! Looks like you had so much fun this weekend.
WOW--the hinges and doorknobs look great! Isn't it amazing what a little paint can do?! Love it!
Looks like you had a lot of fun in your Jeep yesterday...yae!

That is a great transformation on the hardware. It looks so much better. Thanks for visiting,I'm a new follower.
What a DIFFERENCE! I love the gloss black... even if you had to tape, well worth the effort. No way would I have taken the doors off the hinges, either. Thanks for sharing.
Lori
They turned out fab. When I built my house I requested silver, no brass. It was an upgrade. The only piece of brass in the whole house was an ugly chandelier in the dining room. The picks they had were just as bad so I replaced it within a month of moving in. I think my mom ruined brass for me from when I was little. I hate it!
Our whole house is loaded with those brass door knobs and locks. Luckily my hinges are white to match the doors so I wouldn't have to paint those. I admire your bravery! I am not sure I am brave enough to paint them, scared I might mess them up. You did a wonderful job and they look great! I cannot wait to see what the three of you come up with for the project. This is exciting! Speaking of exciting, I still get a great big smile everytime I see you posting about driving that Jeep everywhere. You really should be in Jeep commercials girl! Love it!
Loved your design board Liz..nice work! XO
Hi Liz! You are the most clever and most cute one! I love your doorknob/hinge makeover. We started changing out our brass door knobs out with black but I never even thought about the hinges! I make have to go be me some paint and go to town! How cute of your playing in your Jeep! I have a Jeep Cherokee and love it but would never try even driving over a tiny rock.
Congratulations on being chosen to help with the area! You're good and thanks for popping in to see me.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia;)
Hey sweet girl! I loved your design for her nook.. What great ideas love them!! Great job girl!! Let me know when you get Mr. Roo
I dropped by from Dittle Dattle. I love your door knob idea! Brilliant & WAY cheaper than new hardware! I love the design idea for Jessica's nook, too. Can't wait to see what she does!
Liz, Just saw your work and design board at Kara's blog! Your amazing. I love your selections and detailed descriptions and the numbers coordiate with items and place of purchase. The color scheme is inviting and just the effect you described. I know the lady of the house will love what you took the time and effort to acheive for her nook! Congratulations on your board.Emelia :).

PS -Michaels has their storage books on sale for 40% off. I just bought two yesteray!
hope your having a wonderful day~ L
Liz, we should all own stock in black paint! I hated my brass too, and painted anything in my house that had any brass. I used Oil Rubbed Bronze though, and love it. I do still need to do a few knobs. What a difference. Paint is a beautiful thing. I loved your design board! Loved it!
I've done the hinges before but never the door knobs. I was always afraid the paint would chip up. Thanks for the tip =D
